PURPOSE
TMTA
Founded in 1945, the Tallahassee Music Teachers Association is a professional organization that embraces full membership for independent, public school, and college music teachers.
The purpose of TMTA is to unite qualified music teachers within the Tallahassee area, to raise the standards of music teaching, to sponsor meetings for study and discussion which will continually update our teaching methods, to provide student activities, and the stimulation of musical interest among the lay public.
MEETINGS
For the 2009-2010 year there will be three meetings, an end of the year social event, and many activities for our students. In changing from monthly meetings our purpose is to provide our membership with very meaningful and informative meetings and to provide us more time to concentrate on the many student activities which TMTA sponsors.
MEMBERSHIP
Active membership is available to those applicants who hold at least a Baccalaureate degree with a major emphasis in music. Active members of TMTA also hold membership in FSMTA and MTNA and receive the American Music Teacher magazine and the Florida State Music Teacher newsletter. Active members are eligible to participate in all local, state and national activities, vote, hold state or national office, and apply for state and/or national certification.
Provisional membership is available to those applicants who do not hold at least a Baccalaureate degree with a major emphasis in music. Provisional members of TMTA also hold membership in FSMTA and MTNA and receive the American Music Teacher magazine and the Florida State Music Teacher newsletter. Provisional members must hold a High School diploma or GED and be actively engaged in teaching music. Provisional members have three years to advance to eligibility for Active membership. Provisional members enjoy the same privileges as Active members except for the right to hold state or national office and apply for FSMTA certification. A mentor will be provided by TMTA.
Student membership is available to any college music major (teachers who have held full membership in MTNA or FSMTA do not qualify for student membership). Student members of TMTA also hold membership in FSMTA and MTNA and receive the American Music Teacher magazine and the Florida State Music Teacher newsletter. Student members may attend programs of TMTA, FSMTA, and MTNA and enter students in District Student Day under the supervision of an Active member. Student members may teach no more than ten students. Student members may not vote, hold office in FSMTA or apply for FSMTA certification. Student member dues are $3.00 for TMTA, $10.00 for FSMTA, and 12.00 for MTNA.
Honorary membership is conferred upon members upon the recommendation of the FSMTA Executive Board. Honorary members enjoy the same privileges of Active membership.
Associate membership is available to those who are not professionally engaged in teaching music, but wish to support the association. Associate members enjoy the privileges of Active membership except the right to vote, hold state office, or apply for FSMTA certification.
Senior membership (those members seventy years of age or older) enjoy a twenty-five percent reduction in national and state dues and still have the same privileges of Active membership.
All membership categories include an agreement to abide of the Code of Ethics of FSMTA.

The dues are paid annually to MTNA no later than June 30th. New applicants submit State and National applications, supporting documents, and dues to the local Membership Chairperson. For the 2009-2010 year the total dues are $117 with the following distribution: TMTA $18.00, FSMTA $40.00, and MTNA $61.00.
